Town Deal Projects Update
Camborne Town Council are pleased to provide an update on the progress of its Town Deal projects following recent Council decisions that have helped secure a clear route forward for delivery.
Like many construction and regeneration projects across the country, Camborne’s Town Deal projects have experienced significant increases in costs since the original budgets were established. Over recent months, councillors, officers, contractors and project partners have undertaken extensive reviews of designs, specifications and costs to ensure the projects can continue to deliver meaningful benefits for the community while remaining financially viable.
Through a process known as value engineering, careful decisions have been made to reduce costs where possible while protecting the core objectives of each project. While some difficult choices have been required, the outcome is that all three Town Deal projects can continue to move forward.
Awenva
The Awenva project has experienced the largest increase in costs due to the complexity of restoring historic grade 2 listed buildings, which are located in a Conservation Area and situated in a World Heritage Site. As work has progressed, additional repairs and restoration requirements have been identified, particularly within the White House, where significant roof reconstruction has been required.
To ensure the project can continue, a combination of construction changes and budget reallocations has been agreed. Despite these challenges, work on site continues to make excellent progress. Scaffolding has now come down from the Basset Centre, revealing the restored building and allowing residents to see the transformation taking shape.
The project remains on course to create a vibrant community hub that will include a library, café, heritage space, community rooms and tenancy opportunities for local organisations.
Park Gerry
Following detailed reviews, Park Gerry will now move forward with the delivery of the skatepark, football pitch, pathways and essential groundworks.
Unfortunately, the pavilion, Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and car park have had to be placed on hold at this stage due to budget pressures. The Council recognises that this will be disappointing for some residents. However, it remains fully committed to seeking additional funding opportunities that could allow these elements to be delivered in the future.
Preparations for the project continue behind the scenes, with ground investigation works scheduled to take place over the next four weeks. These surveys will provide important information to support the final design and construction planning process.
The Council currently anticipates the main construction phase beginning in October 2026, with completion expected in March 2027.
Lowarth Holman aka Holman Gardens
Progress is also being made at Lowarth Holman, where tender applications for the remaining works have now closed and been reviewed.
The Council is currently in the process of appointing a new contractor and expects to be able to announce the successful company within the coming weeks. Subject to final arrangements, works are anticipated to recommence on site in mid to late July.
In the meantime, the Council’s Amenities Team will continue carrying out maintenance works to help improve the appearance of the site ahead of the next phase of delivery.
Once completed, Lowarth Holman will provide a new green community space for residents and visitors to enjoy, transforming a previously underused area into an attractive and welcoming environment.
Looking Ahead
The coming months are expected to be an exciting period for all three projects, with visible progress anticipated across each site.
Mayor of Camborne, Councillor Chapman, said, “These projects represent a once-in-a-generation investment in Camborne. While difficult decisions have been necessary to respond to rising costs, we are now in a position where all three projects can move forward. It’s an exciting time, with visible progress already taking shape at Awenva and significant milestones ahead for both Park Gerry and Holman Gardens.”
