Camborne commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe in WWII with 4 events across the day led by the Camborne Branch of the Royal British Legion in partnership with Camborne Town Council.
The commemorations started at 9am with the raising of the VE Day 80 flag above the Passmore Edwards Building and a VE Day 80 proclamation by the Mayor, followed by a special service at St Martin & St Meriadoc parish church. Finally, Camborne’s commemorations culminated in a VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting Ceremony in Camborne Recreation Ground from 8.45-9.45pm. This moving ceremony was again led by the President of the Camborne Branch of the British Legion, Lt Col (Ret’d) Steve Nicholls with parade master Malcolm Godolphin and featured songs from the Holman Climax Male Voice Choir, a bugler and a standard bearer from 147 Sqn Air Cadets, ahead of the beacon lighting at 9.30pm, which synchronised with the lighting of a 1,000 VE Day 80 beacons nationwide.
