Village of Calumet, USA to Celebrate Sister City Relationship with Camborne, Cornwall
CALUMET, MICHIGAN – The Village of Calumet will celebrate its longstanding sister-city relationship with Camborne, Cornwall, United Kingdom, during a special community event on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, 3:00 p.m. UK.
The ceremony will take place in Downtown Calumet and will honour the enduring connection between the two historic mining communities. Representatives from Camborne Town Council and the Camborne Twinning Committee have been invited to participate virtually as part of the celebration.
For generations, Calumet and Camborne have been linked through the migration of Cornish miners and their families to Michigan’s Copper Country. The skills, traditions, language, and culture brought by these immigrants helped shape the communities of the Keweenaw Peninsula and remain an important part of the region’s identity today.
The event will feature the Keweenaw Kernewek with remarks celebrating the shared heritage of the two communities, recognition of ongoing preservation and restoration efforts, and acknowledgment of the important role that international partnerships play in preserving history and strengthening communities. The celebration will also highlight recent efforts by the Calumet Twinning Committee to support restoration initiatives in Cornwall following severe storms that damaged natural areas and historic landscapes. Organisers hope to incorporate themes of stewardship, resilience, and community into the program, reflecting values shared by both communities.
“We are proud of the relationship that exists between Calumet and Camborne,” said Village Manager Megan Haselden. “Although separated by an ocean, our communities share a common history and heritage. This celebration is an opportunity to honour that connection, strengthen friendships, and continue building relationships for future generations.” Community members, local organisations, and visitors are invited to attend.
